Educating patients and families is one of the main roles of nurses in medical centers. Losing health and being hospitalized is one of the situations that doubles the need for learning.
Having complete information about one’s illness and treatment is one of the most important rights of patients, and this information should be designed and implemented based on individual needs and the specific situation of the illness so that it can lead to desirable behavioral changes. Patient education is a process.Patient-centered, based on the needs expressed by the doctor and the patient to help the patient make informed and collaborative decisions about the disease, which is implemented to better control and cope with the disease.
A patient education unit in a hospital refers to a center that provides facilities and content for patient education during hospitalization and after discharge. This center is a sub-unit of the hospital and provides its services under the supervision of the nursing office.
The overall goal of the patient education unit:
Empowering patients to implement self-care programs to improve health
Specific goals of the patient education unit:
1. Familiarizing the client with their illness and their ability to implement self-care programs
2. Increasing their ability to make decisions to continue treatment
3. Increasing the client’s knowledge, attitude, and skills in the field of self-care
4. Improving client satisfaction with treatment services
5. Reducing client psychological trauma and anxiety
6. Improving lifestyle and quality of life
7. Reducing hospital costs
Target group in the patient education unit:
Hospitalized patients and their families, visitors to the center
Description of duties of the patient education unit expert:
1. Planning and implementing educational needs assessment of clients and prioritizing clients’ educational needs based on collected data
2. Designing educational programs based on educational needs assessment of clients
3. Selecting subgroups of the client education team and holding coordination meetings with them, dividing tasks among relevant individuals, raising issues and problems related to client education, and discussing and exchanging views in this regard in relevant meetings.
4. Training the subgroups of the client education team regarding the presentation of educational topics needed by clients, how to inform and communicate effectively with patients
5. Attracting the support and cooperation of competent individuals to advance the goals and policies of the client education unit
6. Planning and participating in the design of educational pamphlets and booklets based on standards and preparing educational databases
7. Forecasting financial resources and required educational facilities based on priorities and established policies
8. Holding training courses and workshops for clients and their companions if needed
9. Preparing and organizing monthly implementation plans
10. Promoting an educational approach to clients and creating a culture in this field
11. Active and dynamic presence of the representative of the client training unit in training working groups
12. Evaluation and determination of the effectiveness of the training provided to clients
13. Collection and analysis of statistical reports related to trained clients during a predetermined period of time
14. Collection and submission of reports on the performance of the client training unit of that center at specific intervals to higher authorities
15. Supervise patient education activities carried out by sub-groups16. Pose problems in the patient education working group and provide intervention solutions to solve problems and make decisions for educational planning
